FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a sworn translation?

A sworn translation (traducción jurada) is an official translation signed and stamped by a translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. It certifies that the translation is faithful and complete, and it is the type of translation Spanish public bodies, courts, notaries and universities accept as official.

Is a sworn translation the same as a certified translation?

Not quite. In countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom, a certified translation is usually a translation with a statement from the translator or agency. In Spain, authorities generally require a sworn translation done by a translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry, so a certified translation made abroad is often not accepted. If in doubt, check with the office where you will submit your documents.

When will I need a sworn translation in Spain?

Typical cases include visa and residence applications, NIE and TIE procedures, Spanish nationality, recognition (homologación) of university degrees, getting married in Spain, inheritances, notarial deeds, court proceedings and employment or tax procedures.

Do I need an apostille?

Public documents issued outside Spain usually need the Hague Apostille, or consular legalization if the issuing country is not part of the Hague Convention, before Spanish authorities will accept them. It is best to obtain the apostille first, so that it can be translated together with the document.

Can I send my documents from abroad?

Yes. Just send a scan or a clear photo by email or WhatsApp from anywhere in the world. You will receive the sworn translation as an electronically signed PDF, with no need to travel or send anything by post. If the authority requires a paper copy, let me know and we will find the best option.

Is an electronically signed sworn translation valid?

Yes. The translation is signed with a qualified electronic signature, which has the same legal effect as a handwritten one. It is valid when submitted electronically, for example through the online portals of Spanish public administrations.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

The price depends on the type and length of the document, so I give you a fixed quote, usually on the same day, with no hidden costs. Most sworn translations are delivered within 24-48 hours.

Do you also translate from Spanish into English?

Yes. I translate in both directions. For Spanish documents that will be used abroad, check with the receiving authority whether they accept a Spanish sworn translation, and whether the original document needs an apostille.

How can I pay?

By bank transfer, including international transfers. Payment details are included with your quote.
